In the heart of Birkirkara, a bustling town in the centre of Malta, a chilling scene unfolded this morning as scaffolding at the local recycling facility suddenly collapsed, leaving several workers injured. The incident, which occurred around 10 am, through the community, raising questions about safety measures and the well-being of our workforce.

Scene of the Accident

The recycling facility, located on Triq il-Karmnu, is a familiar sight to Birkirkara residents. It’s a vital part of Malta’s waste management system, processing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. But today, it was the scene of a dramatic accident. Neighbours reported hearing a loud crash, followed by shouts and sirens as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Injuries and Rescue Efforts

Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department and the Maltese Red Cross arrived to find a chaotic scene. Workers were trapped under the collapsed scaffolding, which had fallen onto a pile of recyclables. They worked swiftly, carefully extracting the injured and providing first aid. The injured were then transported to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.

Dr. Joseph Muscat, a spokesperson for the Malta Medical Association, confirmed that the injuries ranged from minor to severe. “We’re grateful that no lives were lost, but this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers our workers face daily,” he said.

Investigation Launched

The Malta Police Force has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Inspector Mario Azzopardi, leading the investigation, stated, “We’re treating this as a serious incident. Our priority is to ensure the safety of all workers and prevent such incidents in the future.”

Meanwhile, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has also begun an investigation. Dr. Anne Marie Vella, CEO of OHSA, stressed the importance of safety measures in the workplace. “We urge all employers to review their safety protocols and ensure they’re up to standard,” she said.

This incident has once again brought the issue of workplace safety to the forefront. It’s a reminder that while Malta’s economy relies heavily on its workforce, we must prioritise their safety and well-being.

We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the injured workers and their families.
