In the heart of Malta’s rural south, a seemingly ordinary parking lot in Qormi became the scene of an unusual discovery this week. Police, acting on a tip-off, approached a man in his late twenties and found him in possession of an extraordinary amount of synthetic drugs. A total of 100 sachets were seized, leaving authorities astonished at the scale of the find.

Qormi: A Surprising Hotspot?

Qormi, known for its traditional bakeries and historic churches, is not typically associated with large-scale drug busts. The small town, located between Żebbuġ and Ħamrun, has a population of around 19,000. This latest incident has raised eyebrows among locals and authorities alike, sparking questions about the presence of synthetic drugs in the area.

“We’re used to seeing the occasional incident, but this is rare,” said a local shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous. “Qormi is a tight-knit community. We’re concerned about what this might mean for our town.”

Synthetic Drugs: A Growing Concern

The drugs seized were identified as synthetic cannabinoids, often referred to as ‘Spice’ or ‘K2’. These substances are known for their potency and the unpredictable effects they can have on users. They are also difficult to detect, as they are often sprayed onto plant material, which can make them look like ordinary herbs.

Inspector Joe Cutajar from the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad commented, “Synthetic drugs are a growing concern. They’re easy to produce, difficult to detect, and can have serious health implications. We’re working hard to stamp out their use in Malta.”

The man in custody is expected to appear in court soon. Police are also investigating whether there are others involved in the distribution of these drugs in Qormi and beyond.
