Animal Rehoming Centre Coming to Marsaxlokk

Paws for Joy: Animal Rehoming Centre Set for Marsaxlokk

Imagine this: a sprawling, sun-drenched field in Marsaxlokk, Malta’s picturesque fishing village, buzzing with the excited yips and barks of dogs eager for a new home. This isn’t a daydream, but a reality set to unfold thanks to the recently announced plans for an animal rehoming centre in the heart of the village.

A Haven for Furry Friends

The centre, a joint initiative by local animal welfare organisations and the Marsaxlokk Local Council, aims to provide a temporary home for stray and abandoned animals until they can be adopted. The site, a generous expanse of land along Triq il-Kbira, will house kennels, cat shelters, and even a small veterinary clinic for basic medical care.

“This centre will be a breakthrough for animal welfare in Malta,” says Dr. Maria Galea, spokesperson for one of the collaborating organisations. “We’ll finally have a dedicated space to care for and rehome animals in need, right in the heart of a community that’s shown such support for our cause.”

Community Involvement and Beyond

The centre’s success will rely heavily on community involvement. Volunteers are already stepping up to help with construction, daily care, and fundraising. Local businesses have pledged support, with some even offering to sponsor specific kennels or cat shelters.

“We’re overwhelmed by the response,” says Joe Borg, Marsaxlokk’s mayor. “This centre isn’t just about housing animals; it’s about bringing our community together around a common cause. We’re not just building a centre; we’re building a family.”

But the centre’s impact won’t stop at Marsaxlokk’s borders. Plans are already underway to collaborate with other local councils and animal welfare organisations across Malta. The ultimate goal? To create a network of rehoming centres that can tackle the island’s stray animal problem head-on.

“We’re not just thinking about Marsaxlokk,” Dr. Galea adds. “We’re thinking about every town, every village, every community in Malta. We want to see a future where every animal has a chance at a loving home.”
