Abela Vows to Deliver on Promises
Abela’s Pledge: “We Can Deliver, We Will Deliver”
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela stood before a sea of red flags and cheering supporters at the Labour Party’s headquarters in Pietà last night, his voice echoing through the streets of this bustling town. The message was clear: “We know we can deliver on all our promises, and we will.”
Promises on the Table
Abela’s speech, delivered on the eve of the Labour Party’s 76th anniversary, was a manifesto of sorts. He ticked off a list of pledges made during the 2020 general election campaign, from affordable housing to improved healthcare, and from better infrastructure to a greener Malta.
“We promised to build more affordable homes, and we are delivering,” Abela said, referencing the ongoing projects in Birkirkara and Żabbar. “We promised to improve healthcare, and we are delivering, with new hospitals and better equipment on the way.”
Economy and Jobs: The Backbone of Abela’s Pledge
The economy and jobs were at the heart of Abela’s speech. He boasted about Malta’s resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing to the government’s financial aid packages that kept businesses afloat and jobs secure.
“We promised to protect jobs and businesses, and we did,” Abela said. “We know that a strong economy is the backbone of our social policies. We will continue to invest in our economy, creating new jobs and opportunities.”
Abela also touched on the government’s plans to diversify the economy, moving away from the traditional pillars of tourism and financial services. He mentioned the burgeoning tech industry, with Malta’s first tech city set to rise in Ħal Far.
Critics and Challenges: The Road Ahead
Abela’s speech was not without its critics. The Opposition accused the government of making empty promises and failing to deliver on its pledges. They pointed to the housing crisis, with property prices soaring and the waiting list for affordable homes growing longer.
Abela, however, remained undeterred. “We know there are challenges ahead,” he said. “But we are ready to face them. We have a plan, and we will deliver.”
As the crowd chanted “Robert, Robert,” Abela’s message was clear: the Labour Party, and by extension, the government, is not resting on its laurels. It is rolling up its sleeves, ready to deliver on its promises, one project at a time.
if Abela’s pledge will translate into concrete results. But one thing is certain: Malta is watching, and the pressure is on.
