Abela’s Pledge: Can He Deliver?

Abela’s Pledge: “We Know We Can Deliver” – A Closer Look

Under the warm glow of a summer evening, Robert Abela, Malta’s Prime Minister, stood before a sea of supporters at the Labour Party’s headquarters in Ħamrun. The air was thick with anticipation as he declared, “We know we can deliver on all our promises.” But what does this pledge mean for Malta, and can it be fulfilled?

Promises Made, Promises Kept?

Abela’s speech was a recap of his party’s achievements and a preview of their plans. The Labour Party, led by Abela, has been in power since 2013. In that time, they’ve overseen significant developments, from the construction of the new Parliament building in Valletta to the introduction of the Individual Investor Programme, which has brought in billions to the Maltese economy.

However, the party’s tenure has also been marked by controversy, most notably the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. The government has faced criticism for its handling of the case and the subsequent revelations of corruption within its ranks. Abela, who became Prime Minister in 2020, has promised to clean up the party and restore public trust.

: Abela’s Pledges

Abela’s speech was a mix of reassurance and ambition. He promised to continue the government’s economic growth strategy, which has seen Malta’s GDP per capita rise to one of the highest in the EU. He also pledged to tackle housing shortages, with plans to build thousands of new apartments, including in the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta.

The Prime Minister also touched on social issues, promising to improve healthcare services and education. He pledged to increase the minimum wage and to create more jobs, especially for young people. He also promised to protect the environment, with plans to make Malta carbon neutral by 2050.

Challenges Ahead

Abela’s promises are ambitious, but they’re not without their challenges. The housing shortage, for instance, is a longstanding issue that has seen property prices soar and young people struggle to get on the property ladder. The government’s plans to build thousands of new apartments have been welcomed, but there are concerns about where these apartments will be built and who will be able to afford them.

Then there’s the issue of corruption. Abela has promised to clean up the Labour Party, but the task is daunting. The party has a strong grip on power, with many of its members having been in politics for decades. Abela will need to show that he’s serious about rooting out corruption if he’s to restore public trust.

the government’s economic growth strategy has been criticized for benefiting the wealthy more than the poor. Abela will need to show that his plans for economic growth will benefit all Maltese, not just a privileged few.

Can Abela Deliver?

Abela’s speech was a confident one, but whether he can deliver on his promises. The challenges ahead are significant, but Abela has shown a willingness to tackle them head-on. He’s a different leader from his predecessor, Joseph Muscat, and he’s made it clear that he wants to take the Labour Party in a new direction.

But as one Labour supporter told Hot Malta, “We’ve heard promises before. Now we need to see action.” That’s the challenge for Abela and his government. They’ve set out their stall. Now they need to deliver.

As Abela himself put it, “We know we can deliver on all our promises. Because we’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again.” if he’s right.
