Soldier’s Gate Mockery: Court Backs Army’s Dismissal

Imagine standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the capital’s main thoroughfare, and hearing a soldier’s laughter echoing from the nearby army barracks. You might think it’s just another day in the life of a Maltese serviceman. But what if that laughter was directed at the very institution he served?

This was the case when a soldier, identified only as ‘A’, was caught on camera mocking the army gate at the Mtarfa Barracks. The video, which went viral on social media, showed ‘A’ laughing and making derogatory gestures towards the gate, which is a symbol of the Armed Forces of Malta.

An Insult Too Far

The incident sparked outrage among the public and within the military ranks. The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) swiftly launched an investigation, leading to ‘A’s dismissal. But ‘A’ wasn’t ready to accept defeat. He appealed the decision, arguing that his actions were blown out of proportion and didn’t warrant dismissal.

The court, however, had a different opinion. In a recent ruling, the Industrial Tribunal dismissed ‘A’s appeal, upholding the AFM’s decision to dismiss him. The court ruled that ‘A’s actions were a serious breach of discipline and brought the AFM into disrepute.

Fair and Timely, Court Rules

The court, presided over by Deputy Chairman Joseph Zammit, stated that ‘A’s actions were “grossly disrespectful” and amounted to a “serious breach of discipline”. The court also noted that the AFM’s decision to dismiss ‘A’ was fair and timely, given the gravity of his actions.

“The AFM has a right to expect a certain level of respect and discipline from its members,” the court said in its ruling. “The appellant’s actions fell far short of this expectation and warranted the severe penalty imposed.”

Lessons Learned

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of discipline and respect within the military. It also underscores the AFM’s commitment to maintaining high standards among its ranks. Speaking to Hot Malta, an AFM spokesperson said, “We expect all our personnel to uphold the values and standards of the AFM at all times. Any breach of this trust will not be tolerated.”

For ‘A’, the lesson learned is a harsh one. His actions, meant as a joke, have cost him his career. As he leaves the Mtarfa Barracks behind, he might reflect on the power of a laugh and a gesture, and the consequences they can bring.
