Mega Development in Nigret: ‘Vote Owen, Get George’ – NGO Raises Concerns

Imagine waking up one morning to find your quiet, seaside village transformed into a bustling mini-city overnight. That’s the reality residents of Nigret, a small coastal village in the north of Malta, are facing. The local council, led by Mayor Owen Bonnici, has approved a massive development project that has left many residents and environmental groups up in arms.

The project, dubbed ‘Mega Nigret’, promises to bring jobs and tourism to the area. But critics argue it’s more likely to bring traffic jams, overcrowded beaches, and a loss of the village’s unique charm. At the heart of the controversy is the question: who stands to gain the most from this development?

From Fishing Village to Tourist Hotspot

Nigret, once a sleepy fishing village, has seen a steady increase in tourism over the years. But the Mega Nigret project, proposed by local businessman and council ally George Xuereb, takes this to a whole new level. The plans include a five-star hotel, a marina, and hundreds of new apartments.

“It’s not just about the scale of the development,” says Maria Azzopardi, spokesperson for the Nigret Environmental Protection Group (NEPG). “It’s about who’s behind it. George Xuereb has close ties to the council, and many are questioning if this is a case of ‘vote Owen, get George’.”

NGO’s Concerns and Council’s Response

The NEPG has raised several concerns about the project. Top of the list is the environmental impact. Nigret’s coastline is home to several species of nesting birds and rare plants. The group fears that the construction and increased tourism could drive them out.

“We’ve already seen a decline in some species due to increased tourism,” says Azzopardi. “This project could be the final nail in the coffin.”

Mayor Bonnici, however, remains unfazed. “We’ve looked into these concerns,” he says. “The project includes measures to mitigate environmental impact. Plus, we need to think about Nigret’s future. This development will bring jobs and investment.”

What’s Next for Nigret?

The project is currently in the planning stages, with a public consultation period set to begin next month. But the NEPG is already gearing up for a fight. “We’re not against development,” says Azzopardi. “But it has to be sustainable and respect the environment. We won’t let Nigret become just another concrete jungle.”

As for Mayor Bonnici, he’s confident that the project will go ahead. “Nigret is ready for this,” he says. “We’re not stuck in the past. We’re looking to the future.”

whether Nigret’s future is a tourist paradise or an environmental casualty. One thing’s for sure, the village won’t be the same once the dust settles on this mega development.
