Cruise Ship Quarantine: A Tale of Two Countries

Imagine, if you will, the Port of Valletta, Malta’s grand entrance, bustling with life. Now picture a cruise ship, not unlike those that regularly dock here, anchored off the coast of France, a silent, floating city under lockdown. This is not a scene from a dystopian film, but a reality that unfolded recently when France locked down 1,700 passengers and crew after a 90-year-old man died on board, suspected of having COVID-19.

The Ship: A Floating Time Capsule

The ship in question, the Costa Fascinosa, is a 114,500-ton behemoth that can carry over 3,000 passengers. It’s a microcosm of the world, with passengers from all corners of the globe, including some from Malta. When the news broke, it was mid-cruise, with the ship en route from Savona, Italy, to Marseille, France. Instead of docking, it was met by French health officials in full protective gear, who boarded the ship to investigate.

The 90-year-old man, a French national, had fallen ill and was isolated in his cabin. He later died, and although initial tests for COVID-19 were negative, French authorities decided to lock down the entire ship as a precaution. The ship was diverted to the French port of Brest, where it remains anchored, a floating time capsule, its passengers and crew in limbo.

Malta’s Response: A Tale of Two Ships

Back in Malta, the news was met with a mix of concern and relief. Concern for those on board, but relief that it wasn’t one of the many cruise ships that regularly dock in Malta. The Maltese health authorities, ever vigilant, have been screening passengers disembarking from cruise ships since the outbreak began. In fact, Malta’s first case of COVID-19 was detected in a passenger who had disembarked from a cruise ship at the Cruise Terminal in Valletta.

Dr. Charmaine Gauci, Malta’s Superintendent of Public Health, reassured the public that all necessary precautions were being taken. “We are following the situation closely,” she said, “and are in contact with our French counterparts to ensure the safety of all involved.”

Life Goes On: A Glimpse into the Future?

As the Costa Fascinosa sits anchored off the coast of France, its passengers and crew in quarantine, it offers a glimpse into a future that could become all too familiar. A future where travel is restricted, where ships are locked down, and where the world watches from afar, hoping for the best.

For now, life in Malta goes on. The streets of Valletta are filled with the usual bustle, the Barrakka Lift continues to ferry passengers up and down Republic Street, and the Costa Fascinosa is but a headline, a distant echo of a reality that could one day be our own.

But for those on board, the wait continues. Awaiting test results, awaiting clearance, awaiting the day they can disembark and resume their lives. Their story is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of this virus, and the need for vigilance, not just in Malta, but across the globe.

As for the Costa Fascinosa, its fate remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: when it does finally set sail again, it will do so with a new story to tell, a new chapter in its history, and a new understanding of the world it carries with it.
