Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far

As the sun set over the rugged scene of Gozo, a collision involving a motorcyclist and a car left the rider injured on the side of the road. The incident, which occurred on the bustling Triq l-Imqabba road, has once again highlighted the need for road safety on the sister island.

What Happened?

According to eyewitnesses, the collision occurred around 7 PM on Tuesday evening. The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Xewkija, was traveling towards Victoria when a car, reportedly driven by a 45-year-old woman from Għajnsielem, turned left onto the road from a side street, causing the collision.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and sustained injuries to his leg and arm. He was immediately attended to by medics from the Gozo General Hospital, who arrived at the scene within minutes. The injured man was then transported to the hospital for further treatment, where his condition is reported to be stable but serious.

Road Closure and Traffic Disruption

The collision caused significant traffic disruption in the area, with the road being closed for several hours while police investigated the incident. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, leading to heavy congestion on nearby streets.

Local residents and businesses expressed their frustration at the traffic chaos, with some calling for improved road safety measures in the area. “This is not the first time something like this has happened here,” said a local shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous. “We need better signage and maybe even a roundabout to prevent these accidents.”

Investigation Underway

Police are currently investigating the incident and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. “We are treating this as a serious road traffic collision and are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen what happened,” said a police spokesperson.

In the meantime, the motorcyclist’s family has asked for privacy as they support him through his recovery. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time,” said a family spokesperson.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, not just in Gozo, but across Malta. With the summer season in full swing, both residents and tourists are urged to take extra care on the roads.
