Gravel Spill Causes Chaos Near Lija Roundabout

It was a scene straight out of a slow-motion movie: a truck laden with gravel teetering on its side, spilling its load across the busy Lija roundabout. The incident, which occurred yesterday morning, caused traffic chaos and left motorists wondering how to navigate the sudden obstacle course.

Truck Overturns, Bringing Traffic to a Standstill

The truck, belonging to a local construction company, was traveling along Triq il-Kbira when it suddenly veered off course and overturned, blocking one of the roundabout’s exits. The driver, thankfully, escaped with minor injuries. “I was right behind him,” said Joe, a local resident who witnessed the incident. “One moment he was fine, the next, he was tipping over. It was like something out of a film.”

Traffic was brought to a standstill as police and emergency services rushed to the scene. The roundabout, a major thoroughfare connecting Lija, Balzan, and Attard, was reduced to a single lane, causing long tailbacks and frustrated drivers.

Clean-Up Operation Underway

By mid-afternoon, a team of workers had arrived to clear the spill. Using shovels and wheelbarrows, they began the painstaking task of moving the gravel to the side of the road. “It’s going to take some time to clear this up,” said one of the workers, wiping sweat from his brow. “But we’re doing our best to get it done as quickly as possible.”

The clean-up operation is expected to continue into the evening, with the road expected to be fully reopened by rush hour tomorrow. The truck, meanwhile, has been towed away, leaving behind a stark reminder of the morning’s events.

Lessons Learned and Safety Measures

While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, local authorities have reminded truck drivers of to safety guidelines. “We urge all truck drivers to ensure their loads are secure and that they are driving within the speed limit,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Police. “Incidents like this can be avoided with the right precautions.”

In the meantime, motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or expect delays if traveling through Lija. Diversions have been put in place, but traffic is expected to remain heavy until the roundabout is fully reopened.

As for the driver, he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. “It could have been much worse,” he said. “I’m just grateful that no one else was hurt.”
