Malta’s Maritime Platform: From NATO to EUNAVFOR

Malta’s maritime platform is evident in its role as a host to international naval forces. The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operation in the Mediterranean (MIO) has been based in Malta since 2011. Here, ships from NATO nations work together to disrupt the illegal trafficking of migrants and weapons.

Malta also hosts the EU’s counter-piracy operation, EUNAVFOR Med, or Operation Sophia. Launched in 2015, it’s a testament to Malta’s commitment to international cooperation and maritime security. From our shores, EU naval forces train together, share intelligence, and plan joint operations.

Malta’s Maritime Dialogue: The Mediterranean Dialogues

Malta’s role as a platform for dialogue isn’t limited to military cooperation. The Mediterranean Dialogues, an annual conference organized by the Italian think tank ISPI and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been held in Malta since 2015. The conference brings together political leaders, academics, and experts from the Mediterranean and beyond to discuss regional challenges and opportunities.

In 2021, the conference focused on ‘Navigating the Storms: The Mediterranean in the Age of Pandemics and Geopolitical Shifts.’ It was a stark reminder of the challenges we face, but also a testament to Malta’s commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding.

Malta’s role as a maritime platform for global dialogue and cooperation isn’t just about hosting international forces or conferences.
