Mtarfa Motorcycle Crash: Local Man Seriously Injured
Emergency services rushed to Mtarfa on Tuesday evening after a man was found critically injured following a high-speed motorcycle crash. The incident, which occurred on Triq l-Indipendenza, through the usually quiet village, leaving residents shaken.
Crash Scene and Injuries
The crash happened around 7:30 PM, with eyewitnesses reporting a loud bang followed by the screeching of tires. The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old local man, was thrown from his bike and landed heavily on the road. He sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg, multiple fractures, and a suspected head injury.
Paramedics from the Maltese Civil Protection Department arrived swiftly, stabilizing the victim before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His condition was described as critical but stable. The motorcycle, a black Yamaha R6, was left badly damaged, its fairings scattered across the road.
Road Closure and Traffic Diversions
Following the crash, police closed off Triq l-Indipendenza between Triq il-Kbira and Triq l-Għawdex, causing significant traffic diversions. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, with traffic building up along Triq il-Kbira and Triq San Ġorġ.
Local resident Maria Attard, who lives near the crash site, said, “I heard the crash and came out to see what happened. It was terrible. I hope the young man recovers soon. The road needs to be made safer, especially for motorcyclists.”
Police Investigation and Safety Concerns
Mtarfa Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Early indications suggest speed may have been a factor. Inspector Joseph Vella, leading the investigation, urged motorcyclists to ride responsibly, “We’ve seen too many serious crashes involving motorcycles. Please, slow down and ride within your limits.”
This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Mtarfa. The village, known for its winding roads and tight bends, has seen several serious crashes in recent years. Local councillor, Joseph Portelli, called for urgent action, “We need to do more to make our roads safer. This could have been much worse.”
