Malta Celebrates Attenborough’s 100 with Nature Fest

Malta’s Green Heart Beats for Attenborough at 100

Imagine, if you will, the lush greenery of Wied il-Għasri, the valley’s rustling leaves whispering tales of nature’s resilience. Now, picture Sir David Attenborough, the world’s most renowned naturalist, celebrating his 100th birthday amidst such beauty. This isn’t a dream, but a reality unfolding this September, thanks to a local fundraising event.

A Birthday Bash for the Planet’s Champion

On the 8th of September, Malta will join the global celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s centennial with a unique event. ‘Attenborough at 100: A Maltese Celebration’ is more than just a birthday party; it’s a tribute to his lifelong dedication to preserving our planet’s biodiversity and a call to action for us all.

“We’re thrilled to host this event,” says event organiser, Dr. Joseph Borg, a local environmental scientist. “Malta, with its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, is the perfect setting to honour Sir David’s work and inspire our community to protect our natural heritage.”

A Day of Celebration and Conservation

The event, held in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and supported by local businesses, will kick off with a guided nature walk through the scenic valley of Wied il-Għasri. Participants will learn about Malta’s native flora and fauna, echoing Sir David’s lifelong mission to educate and inspire.

Following the walk, a family-friendly festival will take over the nearby Għajn Tuffieħa Bay. Expect live music, local food stalls, and activities that celebrate our natural world. The highlight? A special screening of one of Sir David’s iconic documentaries, under the Maltese night sky.

“We want this to be more than just a celebration,” Dr. Borg explains. “We’re using this event to raise funds for local conservation projects and to raise awareness about our natural heritage.”

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Malta National Aquarium Foundation‘s marine conservation initiatives, ensuring that Sir David’s legacy lives on in Malta’s waters.

So, mark your calendars for the 8th of September. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Sir David’s work or simply someone who loves our planet, there’s a place for you at ‘Attenborough at 100: A Maltese Celebration’.
