Spark of Change: 40 Electric Buses Hit Malta’s Roads

Imagine standing at the bustling Triq Il-Kbira in Victoria, Gozo, watching the sun dip behind the historic Citadel. Suddenly, instead of the usual diesel hum, you hear a soft whir. That’s not a time machine, it’s the future of Maltese public transport – an electric bus, silently gliding to a stop.

Malta’s Public Transport Services are gearing up for a green revolution. By the end of this year, 40 electric buses will be cruising our islands, marking a significant step towards cleaner, quieter roads.

Why Electric?

Malta’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions is no secret. With the transport sector contributing to around 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions, it’s high time we plug into cleaner options. Electric buses, powered by renewable energy, can significantly cut down on these emissions.

But it’s not just about the environment. Electric buses can save us money in the long run. While the initial investment is higher, they’re cheaper to run and maintain than diesel buses. Plus, they’re quieter and more comfortable for passengers.

Charging Ahead

So, where will these buses be plying their trade? The first 20 electric buses will serve routes in Malta, while the remaining 20 will be based in Gozo. They’ll be charging up at depots in Ħal Far and Xewkija, equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure.

But what about range anxiety? Not to worry. These buses can travel up to 250km on a single charge, more than enough for a day’s work. And with fast-charging technology, they can recharge in just a few minutes during layovers.

This isn’t just about adding a few electric buses to our fleet. It’s about creating a sustainable, efficient public transport system that serves us all. It’s about , to a future where our buses are as clean and quiet as the islands we love.

As Malta’s Transport Minister, Ian Borg, puts it, “This is not just an investment in buses, but an investment in a better future for our children.”
