Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a collision involving a motorcyclist and a car on Gozo’s Victoria Road yesterday afternoon. The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Xewkija, was rushed to Gozo General Hospital with suspected broken ribs and a head injury.
Collision Details
The accident occurred around 3:30 PM near the roundabout leading to the Gozo Ferry Terminal. Witnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, traveling towards Mgarr, collide with a car turning left onto the main road from Triq San Lawrenz. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and landed on the roadside.
Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after. The motorcyclist was stabilized and transported to the hospital. His condition is described as stable but serious. The car driver, a 52-year-old woman from Xagħra, was uninjured and cooperated with police.
Traffic Disruption and Witness Appeal
The collision caused significant traffic disruption, with Victoria Road being partially blocked for over an hour. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the accident to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident.
Inspector Joseph Mercieca from the Gozo Police Station said, “We urge anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen something to get in touch. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital to our investigation.”
Road Safety in Gozo
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of road safety in Gozo. While the island’s roads are generally quieter than Malta’s, the increase in traffic, particularly during peak tourist season, has led to an increase in accidents.
Local councillor and road safety advocate, Mario Portelli, commented, “We need to address the lack of road safety education and enforcement on Gozo. We’re seeing more and more accidents, and it’s only a matter of time before something more serious happens.”
Portelli called for increased traffic calming measures, better signage, and stricter enforcement of speed limits. He also suggested implementing a road safety awareness campaign targeted at both locals and tourists.
In the meantime, police remind all road users to drive carefully and follow the rules of the road. They urge motorcyclists to wear protective gear and ensure their vehicles are in good condition.
