Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: A Reminder to Stay Safe on Our Roads

It was a scene all too familiar to Gozo’s emergency services. A motorcyclist lay injured on the side of Triq l-Imqabba, the sun beating down on the asphalt, as paramedics rushed to stabilize him. The crash, which occurred earlier today, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety in our community.

What Happened?

The incident, which took place around noon, involved a collision between a motorcycle and a car near the Qala roundabout. The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Xewkija, was rushed to Gozo General Hospital with suspected broken ribs and a head injury. The driver of the car, a 52-year-old woman from Victoria, was unharmed but shaken.

Witnesses reported that the motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he lost control of his bike, colliding with the car that was making a left turn. The force of the impact sent the motorcyclist flying off his bike and onto the roadside.

Road Safety in Gozo: A Growing Concern

This incident is just the latest in a series of collisions that have occurred on Gozo’s roads in recent months. According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, there have been a total of 17 road traffic accidents on Gozo so far this year, resulting in 24 injuries and one fatality.

Local councils and road safety advocates have been calling for increased enforcement and road improvements to tackle this growing concern. “We need more speed cameras and traffic enforcement officers on our roads,” says Joseph Azzopardi, a councilor from Xewkija. “But we also need drivers and motorcyclists to take responsibility and drive safely.”
