Motorcyclist Injured in Gozo Collision: What We Know So Far

In the heart of Gozo, the peaceful village of Xagħra was disrupted by the screech of brakes and the crunch of metal on Tuesday afternoon. A motorcyclist, a local resident in his 30s, was involved in a collision with a car near the iconic Ġgantija Temples. The incident has left the close-knit community shaken and raised questions about road safety on the sister island.

What Happened?

The collision occurred around 3 PM on Triq il-Ġgantija, the main road leading to the prehistoric temples. Witnesses reported that the motorcyclist, who was traveling towards the temples, collided with a car that was attempting to make a left turn onto the road. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg and suspected internal injuries.

Emergency services, including an ambulance from Gozo General Hospital and a rapid response vehicle from the Malta Police Force, were quickly on the scene. The motorcyclist was stabilized and airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital in Malta for further treatment. The driver of the car, a woman in her 50s, was also taken to Gozo General Hospital for observation, though her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Community Reaction and Road Safety Concerns

The incident has sparked concern and conversation among Xagħra residents. Many have taken to social media to express their worry about road safety in the area, particularly with the increase in tourist traffic during the summer months. “We’ve seen an increase in accidents around the temples,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s a busy area, and with so many tourists, it’s easy for things to get missed.”

Gozo’s Minister for Gozo and Local Government, Justyne Caruana, has expressed her concern over the incident. “I urge all road users to exercise caution and respect for each other,” she said in a statement. “We must ensure that our roads are safe for everyone, especially during this busy tourist season.”

Investigation Underway

The Malta Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident. They are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. “We are treating this as a serious incident and are doing everything we can to establish the facts,” said a police spokesperson.

The motorcyclist remains in a stable condition in Mater Dei Hospital. His family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, the community of Xagħra waits for answers and hopes for improved road safety measures. In the meantime, residents and tourists alike are urged to exercise caution on the roads, particularly in busy areas.
