Mystery Rabbit Found in Gozo with Four Snapped Legs

Mystery in the Mediterranean: Four-Legged, Four-Limbed, Four-Legged No More

Imagine, if you will, the sun-kissed, rugged terrain of Gozo, Malta’s sister island. Picture the lush greenery, the ancient stone walls, and the rustic farmhouses dotting the scene. Now, picture this: a rabbit, not hopping, not bounding, but limping through this idyllic scene, its four legs not quite as they should be. Three legs, two legs, one leg – and the fourth? Snapped clean off.

An Unusual Sight

This was the peculiar sight that greeted a local farmer in Xagħra, Gozo, earlier this week. The rabbit, its body a testament to survival despite its missing limbs, was found wandering near a farm. The farmer, who wishes to remain anonymous, was taken aback. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he told Hot Malta. “It was like something out of a horror film.”

The rabbit, now being cared for by local animal welfare volunteers, is a mystery. How did it lose its legs? Was it a cruel act of nature, or something more sinister?

Nature’s Cruelty or Human Hand?

Dr. Joseph Borg, a local vet with over two decades of experience, has seen many unusual cases but none quite like this. “It’s possible it was a freak accident,” he mused. “Maybe it got caught in a trap and struggled free, snapping its legs in the process. But it’s also possible it was deliberately injured.”

Dr. Borg is quick to point out that while such cases are rare, they’re not unheard of. “Unfortunately, there are people out there who enjoy causing harm to animals. It’s a grim reality.”

Caring for the Four-Legged, Four-Limbed No More

For now, the rabbit, dubbed ‘Tripod’ by its caretakers, is receiving the best possible care. Its wounds are being cleaned and dressed, and it’s being fed a special diet to help it regain its strength. The hope is that, with time and care, Tripod can make a full recovery.

But the bigger question remains: how did this happen? And could it happen again? The local animal welfare community is calling for anyone with information to come forward. “We need to get to the bottom of this,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Animal Welfare NGO. “For Tripod, and for all the other animals that could be at risk.”

As for Tripod, its future is uncertain. But one thing is clear: this is one tough rabbit. It’s survived against all odds, and it’s not ready to give up yet.

“It’s a fighter,” said the farmer who found it. “I just hope we can find out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
