Nigret Residents Fight ‘Titan’ Development
‘Vote Owen, get George’ – NGO questions Nigret mega development
Imagine waking up to find that the quiet street you’ve lived on for years is set to become a bustling thoroughfare, with towering buildings blocking your view of the Mediterranean. This is the reality facing residents of Nigret, a small village in the northern region of Malta, as plans for a massive development project, known as ‘Project Titan’, have been revealed.
From Quiet Village to Urban Hub
Nigret, a village known for its traditional Maltese architecture and close-knit community, is set to transform into an urban hub under the proposed development. The project, spearheaded by local businessman George Borg, plans to construct a mix of residential, commercial, and retail spaces, with the potential to accommodate thousands of new residents and workers.
The development, if approved, would see the construction of two high-rise buildings, standing at 16 and 12 stories respectively, along with several lower-rise blocks. The plans also include a new public square, parking spaces, and retail outlets. However, it’s the scale of the project that has raised eyebrows and concerns among local residents and environmental groups.
NGO’s Concerns and the ‘Vote Owen, Get George’ Campaign
One such group, Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA), has been vocal in its opposition to the project. The NGO, which advocates for a better environment in Malta, has launched a campaign titled ‘Vote Owen, Get George’, playing on the fact that Owen Bonnici, the current Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, is also the MP for the area where the development is proposed.
“We’re not against development,” says Alexei Borg, a spokesperson for FAA. “But we’re against this kind of development. It’s too big, too fast, and it’s not in line with the character of the area. We’re worried about the impact on traffic, on the environment, and on the community itself.”
The campaign has gained traction on social media, with residents and supporters using the hashtag #VoteOwenGetGeorge to express their concerns. Posters and flyers have also been distributed around the area, urging voters to consider the potential consequences of the development when they cast their ballots in the upcoming local council elections.
Borg’s Response and the Future of Nigret
George Borg, the businessman behind the project, has defended his plans, arguing that the development will bring much-needed jobs and investment to the area. “This project is about creating a sustainable, vibrant community,” he says. “It’s about looking to the future, not clinging to the past.”
However, with the local council elections just around the corner, and the potential for the development to become a key issue in the campaign, the future of Nigret hangs in the balance. The ‘Vote Owen, Get George’ campaign has put the spotlight on the project, and the debate around its merits and drawbacks is set to continue.
As Alexei Borg from FAA puts it, “This is about more than just one development. It’s about the kind of Malta we want to live in. Do we want to be a country of towering blocks and gridlocked roads? Or do we want to preserve the best of what we have, while still moving forward?”
The answer to that question, it seems, will be decided at the ballot box.
