Żurrieq’s €6M Community Hub: A breakthrough for South Malta

Imagine the bustling streets of Żurrieq on a sunny afternoon. The scent of fresh bread wafts from the local bakery, children’s laughter echoes from the small park, and the gentle hum of conversation fills the air. Now, picture a vibrant new heart at the centre of this quaint village – that’s the vision Żurrieq’s local council has for the upcoming €6 million community hub.

Revitalising Żurrieq’s Heart

The community hub, set to be built on the current site of the Żurrieq Council’s offices, promises to transform the village’s centre. The project, approved by the Planning Authority, includes a new council building, a public library, a cultural centre, and a community garden. It’s a bold step towards creating a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving public space for Żurrieq’s 11,000 residents.

“This is not just about building a new council office,” says Mayor of Żurrieq, Norman Saliba. “It’s about creating a space where our community can come together, learn, create, and grow. It’s about making Żurrieq a better place to live, work, and visit.”

A Library for the 21st Century

One of the hub’s standout features is the new public library. Designed to be a modern, welcoming space, it will offer more than just books. “We’re planning interactive learning spaces, a digital media lab, and even a small café,” explains Saliba. “We want our library to be a dynamic, inclusive space that caters to all ages and interests.”

For Żurrieq’s students, the new library could mean easier access to resources and a quiet space to study. For the village’s elderly, it could be a place to socialise, learn new skills, or simply enjoy a good book in comfortable surroundings.

Cultural Exchange and Green Spaces

The cultural centre, another key component of the hub, will host art exhibitions, concerts, and community events. It will also provide rehearsal and workshop spaces for local arts groups. “We want to celebrate and showcase Żurrieq’s rich cultural heritage,” says Saliba. “And we want to provide a space where our community can express and explore their creativity.”

But the hub’s impact won’t be limited to its walls. The community garden, planned for the rooftop, will offer a green oasis in the heart of the village. It will provide a space for residents to grow their own produce, learn about sustainable gardening, and simply enjoy the outdoors.

“We believe that this community hub will not only serve Żurrieq’s residents but also attract visitors,” says Saliba. “It will be a place where people can connect, learn, and enjoy. It will be a true reflection of Żurrieq’s spirit.”
