Drug Bust in Paceville: Man Accused of Possession, Trafficking
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a bustling scene unfolded in the heart of Paceville, Malta’s vibrant nightlife hub. A man, later identified as 35-year-old Joseph Camilleri, was arrested by police following a raid at a popular local bar, The Lido Lounge. Officers seized a substantial amount of suspected illegal substances, leading to Camilleri’s accusation of drug possession and trafficking.
Operation ‘Sunrise’: The Raid
The operation, codenamed ‘Sunrise’, was launched following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by the Malta Police Force’s Drug Squad. Acting on a tip-off, officers swooped in around 2:30 AM, as revellers were still pouring onto the streets. The Lido Lounge, a well-known Paceville establishment, was swiftly secured, and patrons were temporarily evacuated while the search began.
Inside, police found what they believe to be a significant quantity of cannabis, cocaine, and ecstasy, hidden in a concealed compartment behind the bar. Camilleri, who was working as a bartender, was taken into custody along with the suspected drugs. The seized substances are now being analyzed by forensic experts to confirm their nature and quantity.
Camilleri’s History and Community Reaction
Camilleri, a Paceville resident, has previous convictions for drug-related offences. His arrest has sparked mixed reactions among the local community. Some residents, who wish to remain anonymous, have expressed relief that police are cracking down on drug activity in the area. Others, however, have raised concerns about the potential impact on local businesses and the nightlife industry.
“It’s a shame, really,” said a long-time Paceville resident. “We want a safe and clean area, but we also don’t want to see our local businesses suffer. It’s a delicate balance.”
Paceville’s Drug Problem: A Long-Standing Issue
Paceville’s drug problem is not a new one. Despite increased police presence and regular raids, illegal substances continue to circulate in the area. The Malta Police Force, however, remains committed to tackling the issue head-on.
Superintendent Mario Cordina, leading the Drug Squad, stated, “We are sending a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking: we will not tolerate this activity in our communities. We are determined to make Paceville, and Malta as a whole, a safer place.”
In the coming days, police will continue their investigations, with a view to building a strong case against Camilleri. They are also appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Paceville.
