Floating Padel: Marsa Barge Set for Sports Revolution

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Picture this: a padel court bobbing gently on the waters of Marsa’s Grand Harbour. Not a mirage, but a proposal by local ship repair company, Medserv, to transform a barge into a floating sports hub. Intrigued? You’re not alone.

From Ship to Court: A Novel Idea

Medserv, based in the heart of Marsa, has applied for a permit to convert a disused barge into a padel court. The barge, currently moored at the Marsa Sports Club, would be transformed into a unique, floating sports facility. The company’s managing director, Alex Montebello, sees this as an innovative way to utilise underused space and promote sports in Malta.

“We’re always looking for ways to give back to the community,” Montebello told Hot Malta. “This seemed like a fun, unique way to do that. Plus, who wouldn’t want to play padel with a view of the Three Cities?”

Floating Firsts: Navigating the Red Tape

While the idea is novel and exciting, it’s not without its challenges. Medserv’s application is the first of its kind, meaning there’s no precedent to follow. The Planning Authority is currently reviewing the proposal, considering factors like environmental impact, safety, and accessibility.

Dr. Anne Marie Vella, a local architect and sports enthusiast, welcomes the proposal. “It’s an innovative use of space,” she says. “But we need to ensure it’s safe, accessible, and doesn’t negatively impact the environment.”

Medserv has engaged with local stakeholders, including the Marsa Local Council and the Marsa Sports Club, to address these concerns. They’ve proposed measures like solar panels for energy, rainwater harvesting, and a design that minimises environmental impact.

If approved, the floating padel court could be operational by late 2023. It would be open to the public, with membership options for regular players. Medserv also plans to host tournaments and events, further boosting Malta’s growing padel scene.
