Qormi Tops Malta’s Traffic Accident List in First Quarter

Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Three-Month Analysis

Picture this: Republic Street, Qormi, on a bustling weekday morning. Cars, vans, and buses jostle for space, while pedestrians weave through the traffic, trying to reach their destinations. Now, imagine this scene multiplied by three months. That’s the reality we’re facing, according to recent statistics.

Hot Malta has obtained data from the Malta Police Force revealing that Qormi topped the list of local councils with the most traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2023. With a total of 158 accidents, Qormi saw an average of nearly six incidents per week, leaving residents and authorities alike wondering what’s causing this spike.

Understanding the Numbers

To put these numbers into perspective, let’s look at the broader picture. Malta’s total road accidents in the first three months of 2023 stood at 1,234. Qormi’s share of this figure, at 158, is significant. When compared to other local councils, Qormi’s numbers are indeed alarming. Birkirkara, the second-highest, reported 132 accidents, while Msida came in third with 121.

Breaking down Qormi’s numbers, we find that the majority of accidents, 87, occurred on weekdays. This suggests that the town’s busy commercial and industrial areas, like Triq il-Kbira and Triq San Girgor, are hotspots for incidents. The peak hours for accidents were between 8 am and 12 pm, indicating rush hour congestion as a major factor.

What’s Behind the Numbers?

So, what’s causing this increase in traffic accidents in Qormi? We spoke to local residents and experts to get some insights.

Traffic Congestion

Many residents pointed to traffic congestion as a major issue. “Qormi is a busy town with a lot of traffic, especially during peak hours,” said Joe, a long-time resident. “It’s not surprising that we’re seeing more accidents.”

Speeding and Parking Issues

Speeding and parking problems were also cited as contributing factors. “People tend to speed through the streets, and parking is a nightmare,” said Maria, who runs a shop in the town centre. “It’s a recipe for disaster.”

Infrastructure and Road Design

Some experts suggest that the town’s infrastructure and road design may also be playing a role. “Qormi has a lot of narrow streets and poorly designed junctions,” said Dr. Martin Azzopardi, a traffic engineer. “These factors can contribute to accidents.”

What’s Being Done?

In response to these figures, Qormi Local Council has been working with the Malta Police Force and Transport Malta to address the issue. “We’re looking at various initiatives, including traffic calming measures, improved signage, and public awareness campaigns,” said a council spokesperson.

the council is also exploring the possibility of implementing a traffic management plan, similar to those in place in other busy towns like Birkirkara and Msida.

: A Call to Action

While the council and authorities work on their end, there’s a lot that residents and drivers can do too. Slow down, park responsibly, and always be aware of other road users. Let’s all do our part to make Qormi’s roads safer.

As Qormi resident and local historian, Dr. Joseph Mizzi, puts it, “Qormi is more than just a town; it’s a community. It’s up to us, the community, to make sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our streets safe.”
