Emergency services rushed to the Birkirkara recycling facility this morning after a scaffolding structure collapsed, injuring several workers. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 AM, through the industrial area, with debris scattering across the site.

Injured Workers Transported to Hospital

Paramedics from the Malta Red Cross and the Armed Forces of Malta Medical Corps attended to the injured workers, providing immediate medical assistance. A total of seven workers were transported to Mater Dei Hospital, with two reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Dr. Lorraine Cassar, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, confirmed that the hospital’s trauma team was on standby and ready to handle any serious injuries. She also urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the OHSA.

Reaction from the Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning

Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning, Aaron Farrugia, expressed his concern over the incident. In a statement, he said, “I am deeply concerned about this incident and my thoughts are with the injured workers and their families. I have instructed my Permanent Secretary to work closely with the OHSA to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out.”

Farrugia also reiterated the government’s commitment to workplace safety, stating, “The safety of our workers is a top priority. We will not tolerate any lapses in safety standards.”
