Qormi’s Road Safety Concern: A Spike in Early-Year Accidents

Picture this: The sun is barely up, and already, the first responders are rushing to another accident scene in Qormi. This isn’t an isolated incident, but a trend that’s been unfolding in Malta’s third-largest town since the start of the year. According to the Malta Police, Qormi has seen the most traffic accidents in the first three months of 2023 compared to other localities.

By the Numbers: Qormi’s Accident Hotspots

Data obtained from the Malta Police Force reveals that Qormi registered a total of 114 traffic accidents between January and March, with an average of 38 accidents per month. This figure outpaces other localities like Birkirkara (97 accidents) and Zebbug (82 accidents) during the same period. The most accident-prone streets in Qormi include Triq l-Indipendenza, Triq il-Kbira, and Triq San Girgor, with multiple incidents reported at these locations.

Understanding Qormi’s Road Safety Challenge

To understand why Qormi is grappling with this issue, we need to look at the town’s unique characteristics. Qormi, known for its rich history and traditional bakeries, is also a bustling commercial hub with a high density of vehicles. The narrow streets, heavy traffic, and lack of dedicated cycling lanes contribute to the safety concerns. Qormi’s central location makes it a transit point for many commuters, further intensifying road usage.

Local resident and business owner, Mario Portelli, echoes these concerns. “I’ve noticed an increase in traffic and accidents over the past few months. The streets are too narrow for the amount of traffic we have, and there’s a lack of safe spaces for cyclists and pedestrians,” he says.

Addressing the Issue: Qormi’s Road Safety Initiatives

Qormi Local Council is aware of the situation and has been working on initiatives to improve road safety. The council has been lobbying for traffic calming measures, better street lighting, and the implementation of a 20km/h speed limit in residential areas. Additionally, they have been collaborating with the Malta Police to increase traffic enforcement and awareness campaigns.

Inspector Joseph Vella from the Malta Police’s Traffic Department comments, “We’re committed to improving road safety in Qormi. We’ve stepped up patrols in accident hotspots and are working closely with the local council to implement safety measures.”

A Call to Action: Safer Streets for Qormi

While the authorities work on improving road infrastructure, residents and commuters also have a role to play. Slowing down, adhering to traffic rules, and being more considerate of other road users can significantly contribute to safer streets. Let’s all do our part to make Qormi’s roads safer for everyone.

As Mario Portelli puts it, “We all need to take responsibility. It’s our town, our streets, and our safety. Let’s work together to make Qormi a safer place for everyone.”
