Gozo, Malta’s sister island, is a living museum. It’s home to some of the world’s oldest freestanding structures, like the Ġgantija Temples, predating even Stonehenge. The Azure Window, now lost to the sea, was a symbol of this ancient heritage. But with development on the rise, how much more of Gozo’s history are we willing to lose?

Gozo’s historical scene faces a daunting challenge: development. With a growing population and tourism industry, the pressure to build is intense. But at what cost? The proposed development of the Xlendi Bay area has sparked controversy, with environmentalists and historians warning of potential damage to the area’s rich archaeological heritage.

Dr. Anthony Pace, a local archaeologist, warns, “Gozo’s history is not just about the big sites like the Ġgantija Temples. It’s about the everyday places where people lived, worked, and died. We’re losing that narrative, bit by bit, with every new development.”

Preservation Efforts: A Glimmer of Hope

All is not lost, however. Efforts are underway to protect Gozo’s historical scene. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has designated several areas as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). The Gozo Archaeological Society is also working tirelessly to raise awareness and advocate for better protection.

the European Union’s LIFE programme has funded projects like ‘Gozo Nature & Culture’, aiming to protect and enhance the island’s unique heritage. But these efforts need public support to truly make a difference.

As Gozo resident and historian, Joe Borg, puts it, “It’s our duty to protect what’s left of our history. We’re not just fighting for the past; we’re fighting for the future. Because once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.”
