Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Plant Injures Workers
As the sun rose over Birkirkara on Tuesday, the usual hum of activity at the recycling facility on Triq il-Karmnu was suddenly shattered by a deafening crash. A section of scaffolding, towering some 15 metres high, had given way, sending workers scrambling for safety and leaving several injured.
Scene of the Accident
The once-vertical scaffolding now lay in a jumbled heap, a stark contrast to the organised chaos of the recycling plant. Workers, many still in their high-vis vests, milled about, shaken but thankfully alive. Emergency services, with their sirens wailing, arrived swiftly, turning the scene into a flurry of activity.
Injuries and Rescue Efforts
Five workers were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, with two reported to be in critical but stable condition. Paramedics worked swiftly, stabilising the injured and ensuring they were safely transported for further treatment. The Malta Developers Association (MDA) confirmed that the injured were employed by a subcontractor at the plant.
Investigation Launched
Following the incident, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) launched an investigation. Inspectors were on site, examining the remains of the scaffolding and speaking to witnesses. The MDA has also pledged its full cooperation in the investigation, stating, “Safety is our top priority, and we will leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this.”
This is not the first incident of its kind in Malta. In 2019, a scaffolding collapse in Msida left one worker dead and several others injured. These incidents highlight the need for stringent safety measures and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the recycling plant remains closed. The MDA has assured the public that operations will resume once the site has been deemed safe and the investigation completed.
For now, the focus is on the injured workers and their families. Hot Malta will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
