Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Plant Injures Workers
Emergency services rushed to the Birkirkara recycling facility this morning after a scaffolding structure collapsed, injuring several workers. The incident occurred around 10 am, sending shockwaves through the usually bustling industrial area.
Scene of the Accident
The Birkirkara recycling plant, located on Triq il-Kbira, is a significant contributor to Malta’s waste management efforts. The scaffolding, which had been erected for ongoing maintenance work, suddenly gave way, causing debris to scatter across the site. Neighbouring businesses reported hearing a loud crash followed by screams.
Paramedics and firefighters arrived swiftly, finding three workers trapped under the collapsed structure. They were extricated and immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital. Their conditions range from stable to critical, with two requiring surgery.
Investigation Launched
The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has launched an investigation into the incident. Inspectors were on site within hours, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. The plant has been temporarily closed pending the investigation’s outcome.
OHSA spokesperson, Maria Grech, stated, “We are treating this as a high-priority case. Our thoughts are with the injured workers and their families. We will leave no stone unturned in determining the cause of this incident.”
Safety Concerns in the Industry
This incident has reignited concerns about safety standards in Malta’s industrial sector. While the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, some point to the age and condition of the scaffolding as a possible factor.
Malta’s General Workers’ Union (GWU) has called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations. GWU Secretary General, Mario Camilleri, said, “Our members’ safety should always be the top priority. We urge employers to ensure their scaffolding is in top condition and that workers are properly trained.”
Support for the Injured
Local communities and fellow workers have rallied around the injured. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support their families, with donations pouring in from across Malta. The page’s organiser, Joseph Vella, said, “We’re a close-knit community. When something like this happens, we all feel it. We want to do whatever we can to help.”
