Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Plant Injures Workers

Emergency services rushed to the Birkirkara recycling facility this morning after a scaffolding structure collapsed, injuring several workers. The incident occurred just before 9 am, causing chaos and disrupting operations at the plant.

Scene of the Accident

The scaffolding, which was being used for maintenance work on the facility’s tall chimney, came crashing down, leaving a scene of destruction. Workers at the plant described the moment of the collapse as ‘terrifying’, with debris scattering across the compound. The injured workers were quickly attended to by on-site first aiders and paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department.

Injuries and Rescue Operations

Five workers were injured in the incident, with two sustaining serious injuries and being rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. The other three were treated for minor injuries and released. Rescue operations were swift, with the Civil Protection Department working alongside the Armed Forces of Malta to clear the debris and ensure no one else was trapped.

Investigation Launched

The incident has been reported to the Malta Police, who have launched an investigation. Inspectors from the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) were also on site, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. The recycling plant has been temporarily closed pending the outcome of the investigation.

In a statement, the plant’s management expressed their concern for the injured workers and their families. They also assured the public that safety is their top priority and that they are cooperating fully with the authorities.

This is not the first time a scaffolding collapse has occurred in Malta. In 2018, a scaffolding collapse at a construction site in Msida injured two workers. The incident today has once again raised questions about safety standards in the construction and maintenance industries.

Hot Malta has reached out to the OHSA and the Malta Police for comment and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
