Early this morning, the peaceful streets of Birkirkara were shattered by a deafening crash. The cause? A scaffolding collapse at the local recycling facility, leaving several workers injured and the community on edge.

The Accident

The incident occurred around 7:30 AM at the Malta Recycling Limited plant on Triq il-Kunsill, Birkirkara. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with workers scattering as the scaffolding gave way, sending metal poles and debris flying.

“I was just opening my shop when I heard this loud bang,” said Joe Xuereb, a local shopkeeper. “I looked up and saw the scaffolding coming down. It was like something out of a movie.”

Injuries and Response

Emergency services were quick to respond. The injured workers, ranging from minor cuts to more serious injuries, were transported to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. The exact number of injured is yet to be confirmed, but sources indicate it’s around a dozen.

“We’re grateful for the quick response of the emergency services,” said Anthony Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Malta Recycling Limited. “Safety is our top priority, and we’re cooperating fully with the authorities as they investigate the cause of this incident.”

Investigation and Aftermath

The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. The facility has been temporarily closed pending the outcome of the investigation.

This incident has raised concerns among Birkirkara residents. “We’re worried about our safety and the safety of our children,” said Maria Camilleri, a local resident. “We need to know what happened and how it can be prevented from happening again.”

Malta Recycling Limited has assured the public that they are committed to finding the cause of the incident and implementing measures to prevent any future occurrences. They have also offered their support to the injured workers and their families.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the Birkirkara community is united in its hope for a swift resolution and a return to safety at the recycling facility.
