Drugs Raid in Paceville: Man Arrested with 1.5kg of Cannabis
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a bustling scene unfolded in the heart of Paceville, Malta’s nightlife hub. A man, later identified as 32-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was apprehended by police outside the popular bar, ‘The Lounge’, with a staggering 1.5kg of cannabis in his possession. The arrest through the usually lively streets, with onlookers watching in disbelief as police officers seized the illicit substances.
Unravelling the Allegations
Xuereb, a resident of Birkirkara, was subsequently charged with drug possession and trafficking, according to a statement released by the Malta Police Force. The cannabis, with an estimated street value of €15,000, was found in his car, parked just off St. George’s Road, a stone’s throw away from the island’s most vibrant nightclubs.
Investigations are ongoing, but sources close to the case suggest that Xuereb may have been involved in supplying drugs to local nightlife hotspots. This is not Xuereb’s first brush with the law; he has previous convictions for drug-related offenses, raising concerns about the recurrence of such activities in Malta’s nightlife scene.
Community Reactions and Police Crackdown
News of the arrest has sparked outrage among local residents and business owners in Paceville. “We’ve had enough of this,” said Mario Portelli, a long-time resident of the area. “We want our streets back. We want our children to grow up in a safe environment, not one where drugs are freely available.”
The Malta Police Force has vowed to step up their efforts in the area, with Superintendent of Police, Raymond Micallef, stating, “We are committed to maintaining the safety and security of Paceville. This arrest sends a clear message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated.”
In light of this incident, local councillors are calling for increased police presence in the area, as well as stricter regulations for bars and clubs to prevent drug-related activities. A public meeting has been scheduled for later this week at the St. George’s Bay Band Club to discuss these issues and hear from the community.
: A Safer Paceville?
The future of Paceville’s nightlife hangs in the balance. With community pressure mounting and police promising a crackdown, the coming months will be crucial in shaping the future of this iconic Maltese hotspot. As the investigation into Xuereb’s alleged drug trafficking continues, one thing is clear: the people of Paceville are united in their desire for a safer, drug-free community.
“We want Paceville to be a place where people can enjoy a night out without fear,” said Portelli. “We’re not asking for much, just a bit of peace and quiet, and a safe environment for everyone.”
