Lija Roundabout Gets Safety Boost with Resurfacing
Truck Crash Prompts Lija Roundabout Resurfacing
Picture this: a crisp Maltese morning, the sun barely peeking over the ancient walls of Lija. Suddenly, a deafening crash echoes through the quiet streets. A truck, laden with goods, has lost control and skidded across the roundabout at Triq San Ġorġ. The scene is one of chaos, with debris scattered and traffic at a standstill. This wasn’t just any ordinary morning in Lija; it was the start of a series of events that would lead to a much-needed facelift for the roundabout.
An Eye on Safety
The incident, while thankfully not resulting in serious injuries, served as a wake-up call for local authorities. The roundabout, a major junction connecting Lija to neighboring Birkirkara and Attard, had long been a concern for residents and drivers alike. The surface, worn out from years of heavy traffic, was a potential hazard, especially in Malta’s unpredictable weather.
Councillor for Infrastructure, Resources, and Public Cleansing, Alex Muscat, was quick to react. “We’ve been keeping a close eye on the roundabout’s condition,” he said. “The truck crash was the final straw. We can’t afford to wait for another incident to happen.”
Resurfacing Begins
Work on the resurfacing project began last week, with a section of the roundabout closed off to traffic. The old, damaged surface is being replaced with a new, high-grip asphalt mix designed to improve traction and safety. The project is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, with minimal disruption to traffic flow.
Residents and drivers have been vocal about their support for the project. “It’s about time they did something about this roundabout,” said Joe, a Lija resident who asked to be identified only by his first name. “I’ve lived here for years, and I’ve seen too many close calls. I’m glad they’re finally doing something about it.”
Once completed, the resurfaced roundabout will not only improve safety but also enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal. The new surface will be a stark contrast to the old, worn-out one, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Lija and its people.
Councillor Muscat had this to say about the project: “We’re not just resurfacing a roundabout; we’re investing in the safety and well-being of our community. We’re committed to making Lija a safer, more enjoyable place to live and visit.”
