Teen’s Face Slashed in Birkirkara Street Brawl: Court Hears Chilling Details

BIRKIRKARA, Malta – The usually bustling streets of Birkirkara fell silent as a teenager lay bleeding, his face slashed, following a brutal fight that left the community shaken. The chilling details of the incident emerged in court this week, painting a grim picture of a seemingly ordinary evening turned violent.

From Street Football to Street Fight

It was just another evening in late June when a group of teenagers gathered to play street football on Triq San Pawl in Birkirkara. The game, a common sight in Malta’s residential streets, turned sour when a dispute over a call led to heated arguments. The arguments quickly escalated, with a group of five individuals, including the victim, facing off against another group.

According to court testimony, the victim, then 17, was punched and kicked to the ground. As he tried to shield his face, a blade was drawn, and he felt a searing pain across his cheek. The court heard that the attacker, now 18, lunged at the teenager, slashing his face with a hunting knife.

Community in Shock

News of the incident through the close-knit Birkirkara community. Residents, used to the peaceful hum of daily life, were left reeling. “We’ve always felt safe here,” said a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “To think something like this could happen on our doorstep is terrifying.”

The victim, now recovering at home, told Hot Malta that he still struggles with the aftermath. “I look in the mirror and see a scar that wasn’t there before. It’s a constant reminder of that night,” he said.

Court Proceedings and Aftermath

The attacker, along with three others involved in the fight, have been charged with grievous bodily harm and affray. The court heard that the knife used in the attack was found hidden in a nearby garden. The accused have pleaded not guilty and await trial.

In the meantime, the Birkirkara community is left grappling with the reality of violence in their midst. Local councils have been holding meetings to discuss safety measures, and residents have been encouraged to look out for one another.

As the trial continues, the teenager’s family hopes for justice. “No one should have to go through what my son did,” his mother said. “We just want to see this through and make sure something like this never happens again.”
