Lija Roundabout Resurfacing After Truck Crash

Ever driven past the Lija roundabout and felt like you’re on a rollercoaster ride? Well, it’s not just you. That bumpy stretch of tarmac has been a bone of contention for locals and commuters alike. But a recent truck crash might just be the catalyst for some much-needed change.

The incident, involving a truck laden with construction materials, occurred a few weeks ago. The vehicle, unable to navigate the roundabout’s uneven surface, ended up in a ditch. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured. But the crash was a stark reminder of the roundabout’s deteriorating state.

“I’ve been driving past this roundabout for years, and it’s only gotten worse,” says Lija resident, Maria Grech. “It’s not just an inconvenience; it’s a safety hazard.”

Following the crash, the Lija Local Council sprang into action. They’ve earmarked funds to resurface part of the roundabout, specifically the section where the truck crash happened. The works, set to begin next month, are expected to take around two weeks to complete.

“We’ve been pushing for these repairs for some time now,” says Lija Mayor, Joe Xuereb. “The truck crash was a wake-up call. We can’t afford to wait any longer.”

The resurfacing project will focus on improving the road’s surface and drainage, aiming to make the roundabout safer and smoother for drivers.

While the upcoming repairs are a step in the right direction, some locals argue that they’re a mere band-aid solution. They’re calling for a complete overhaul of the roundabout, including a redesign to improve traffic flow and safety.

“Resurfacing is a start, but it’s not enough,” says Lija resident and business owner, Tony Portelli. “We need a roundabout that works for everyone – drivers, cyclists, pedestrians. We deserve a smooth ride, not just a quick fix.”
