NGOs Slam Sliema Lido Reclamation Plans

NGOs: Sliema Lido Reclamation ‘A Disaster in the Making’

Imagine standing on Sliema’s bustling promenade, the sun dipping into the Mediterranean, and picturing a new, man-made extension jutting out into the sea. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic film, but a real proposal that’s got environmental groups seeing red.

Reclamation Plans Unveiled

The Sliema Local Council recently revealed plans to reclaim land from the sea, creating a new lido area. The project, part of a larger urban regeneration plan, aims to provide more public space and boost tourism. But not everyone’s thrilled.

The proposed site, located off Sliema Point, is a popular spot for swimming, diving, and fishing. It’s also home to a thriving marine ecosystem, which has NGOs up in arms.

NGOs Sound the Alarm

Environmental groups like BirdLife Malta and Din l-Art Ħelwa have slammed the plans, calling them ‘pure madness’ and a ‘disaster in the making’. They argue that the project will destroy vital marine habitats and disrupt wildlife, including protected species like the Mediterranean monk seal.

“This is not just about losing a beautiful stretch of sea,” says Mark Sultana, Director of BirdLife Malta. “We’re talking about destroying a delicate ecosystem that supports a wide range of marine life.”

Economic Gains vs. Environmental Costs

The debate has sparked a wider conversation about Malta’s approach to development. Proponents argue that the project will bring economic benefits, including new jobs and increased tourism revenue. But critics warn that the environmental costs are too high.

“We can’t keep sacrificing our environment in the name of progress,” says Anna Falzon, Chairperson of Din l-Art Ħelwa. “Malta is a small island with limited resources. We need to protect what we have, not pave it over.”

Public consultations on the project are ongoing, and the final decision rests with the Planning Authority. But with passions running high, one thing’s for sure: this isn’t a battle that’s going to disappear beneath the waves anytime soon.
