Lija Roundabout Resurfacing After Truck Crash
Truck Crash Prompts Lija Roundabout Resurfacing
Early this morning, the usually bustling Lija roundabout was reduced to a flurry of flashing lights and rubberneckers. A heavy goods vehicle, attempting to navigate the tight turn, lost control and left a trail of debris and diesel across the tarmac. The crash, while thankfully not causing any serious injuries, has led to the roundabout being temporarily closed and plans for resurfacing works to be brought forward.
Roundabout Resurfacing: A Much-Needed Refurb
This isn’t the first time the Lija roundabout has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Locals and commuters alike have long been calling for an upgrade to the worn-out surface, citing safety concerns and the increased traffic volume. The recent incident has only underscored the urgency of these works.
“It’s about time they did something about this roundabout,” said Mario, a Lija resident who’s witnessed several near-misses. “I’ve lived here for decades, and the state of this road has only gotten worse.”
What’s in Store for the Lija Roundabout?
The Malta Road Authority has announced that a section of the roundabout, including the problematic turn where the truck crash occurred, will be resurfaced. The works are expected to begin next week and will take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
While the resurfacing will address the immediate safety concerns, some locals are hoping for more significant changes. “A complete overhaul, with better signage and maybe even a traffic light system, would really help,” suggested Anna, another Lija resident.
The MRA has not ruled out further improvements in the future, but for now, they’re focusing on getting the road back in a safe condition as soon as possible.
