Sliema Lido Land Reclamation: NGOs Sound Alarm
NGOs Sound Alarm on Sliema Lido Land Reclamation: ‘Pure Madness’
Imagine standing at the breakwater of Sliema’s popular lido, the Mediterranean stretching out before you, the sun dipping low, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Now, picture that view obstructed by a towering wall of concrete and steel. This is not a dystopian fantasy, but a very real possibility if recent plans by the Malta Developers Association (MDA) come to fruition.
Reclamation Plans: A Sea Change for Sliema
The MDA has proposed a land reclamation project that would see a significant chunk of the sea off Sliema’s lido transformed into prime real estate. The plans, which have been met with fierce opposition from environmentalists and residents alike, would involve reclaiming around 100,000 square meters of sea, adding a substantial area of land to the already densely populated town.
But the MDA argues that the project is necessary to meet the demands of Malta’s growing population and thriving economy. “Malta is running out of space,” says MDA president, Joseph Portelli. “We need to look at innovative solutions to accommodate our growing needs.”
NGOs: A Red Sea of Protest
Environmental NGOs have been quick to condemn the plans, describing them as ‘pure madness’. “This is not just about losing a beautiful view,” says Mark Mallia, CEO of Nature Trust Malta. “It’s about the devastating impact this will have on our marine ecosystem, our climate, and our very way of life.”
Mallia points to the potential loss of marine habitats, increased coastal flooding due to climate change, and the loss of public space as key concerns. “We’re not against development,” he says. “But it has to be sustainable and respect our natural environment.”
Residents of Sliema have also voiced their opposition, with many taking to social media to express their outrage. “This is our lido, our beach, our sea,” says Sliema resident, Maria Attard. “We won’t let them concrete it over without a fight.”
: A Battle for the Shores
The future of the Sliema lido remains uncertain. The MDA has vowed to push ahead with the plans, while environmentalists and residents have promised a legal challenge. The battle for Malta’s shores is far from over.
As we stand on the brink of this contentious issue, one thing is clear: the future of Sliema’s lido, and indeed Malta’s coastline, hangs in the balance. It’s a future that will be shaped by the decisions we make today, and the actions we take tomorrow.
“We’re not just fighting for our lido,” says Mallia. “We’re fighting for the very soul of Malta.”
