Malta’s Ukrainian Community Braces as Kyiv Comes Under Heavy Fire

Sirens Wail in Kyiv: Malta’s Ukrainian Community on Edge

In the heart of Malta, the Ukrainian Embassy in Ta’ Xbiex is a hive of activity. The usually quiet street, lined with pastel-coloured houses and bougainvillea, is now a hub of concern and support. The reason? Heavy Russian strikes on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, have left one dead and 31 wounded, according to the latest reports.

Malta’s Ukrainian community, numbering around 2,000, is on edge. Many have family and friends back home, and the news from Kyiv is chilling. “I haven’t been able to sleep properly since this started,” says Anna, a Ukrainian student studying in Malta. “I’m constantly checking my phone for news, hoping everyone I know is safe.”

Malta’s Response: Solidarity and Support

Malta has been quick to condemn the attacks and express solidarity with Ukraine. Prime Minister Robert Abela has been vocal in his support, tweeting, “Malta stands with Ukraine. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.” The Maltese government has also offered humanitarian aid and is ready to welcome Ukrainian refugees.

Locally, initiatives are springing up to support Ukraine. In Valletta’s Republic Street, volunteers are collecting donations for humanitarian aid. “We’re seeing a lot of Maltese people coming forward to help,” says Maria, one of the volunteers. “It’s heartwarming to see this level of solidarity.”

Kyiv’s Resilience: A Beacon of Hope

Despite the heavy strikes, Kyiv remains defiant. Videos shared on social media show residents singing and clapping from their balconies, a symbol of unity and resilience. “They’re not letting fear divide them,” says Alex, a Maltese man married to a Ukrainian woman. “It’s inspiring to see.”

Back at the Ukrainian Embassy, the mood is somber but determined. “We’re staying strong,” says the embassy’s press attaché. “We know this is a difficult time, but we’re grateful for the support from Malta and the international community.”

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, Malta’s Ukrainian community, and the island nation as a whole, stand ready to support and assist in any way they can. The future is uncertain, but the spirit of solidarity is unwavering.
