Drug Bust in Paceville: Man Accused of Possession, Trafficking

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a bustling scene unfolded in the heart of Paceville, Malta’s vibrant nightlife district. A man, later identified as 32-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was apprehended by police following a raid on a bustling apartment on St. George’s Road. The operation, led by the Drugs Unit, resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of illegal substances and drug paraphernalia, sending shockwaves through the usually lively streets.

Operation ‘Sunrise’: The Lead-Up

Codenamed ‘Operation Sunrise’, the police operation had been ongoing for several weeks, with undercover officers monitoring suspected drug activity in the area. Paceville, known for its pulsating nightclubs and bars, has long been a hotspot for drug-related incidents. However, the recent increase in drug-related complaints from residents and tourists alike prompted the police to step up their efforts.

Superintendent Mark Attard, leading the operation, commented, “We’ve received numerous tips about drug activity in this area. Our aim is to clean up Paceville, making it a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Raiding the Apartment on St. George’s Road

Acting on a search warrant, police raided the apartment on St. George’s Road around 3 AM. They found Xuereb in possession of what is believed to be cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis, along with scales, baggies, and other tools of the trade. The seized drugs, estimated to be worth thousands of euros, were packaged and ready for distribution.

Xuereb, a local resident with a history of drug-related offenses, was arrested on the spot. He is currently being held at the Cottonera Police Headquarters, awaiting his court appearance. If convicted, he faces up to 26 years in prison under Malta’s tough drug laws.

Community Reaction and the Fight Against Drugs

The news of the arrest has been met with relief and support from the Paceville community. “We’re tired of seeing our neighborhood being ruined by drugs,” said Maria, a local shop owner. “I hope this sends a strong message to anyone thinking of dealing drugs here.”

Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our message is clear: drug trafficking will not be tolerated. We will continue to work closely with the police to keep our communities safe.”
