Man Remanded Over Birkirkara Sexual Assault

Man Remanded After Alleged Sexual Assault in Birkirkara

In the quiet, residential street of Triq il-Kunċizzjoni, Birkirkara, a chilling incident has left neighbours shaken. A man, identified as 35-year-old Joseph Xuereb, has been remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting his former partner, a 32-year-old woman, in her own home.

Allegations and Arrest

The incident, which occurred late last week, saw Xuereb allegedly force his way into the woman’s apartment and subject her to a violent sexual assault. Neighbours, who heard the commotion, alerted the police. Upon arrival, officers found the woman distressed and Xuereb still at the scene. He was subsequently arrested and charged with rape and aggravated burglary.

Xuereb, a native of Msida but residing in Birkirkara, appeared before Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech at the Criminal Court in Valletta yesterday. He was remanded in custody for 14 days, pending further investigations. The court also issued a protection order, prohibiting Xuereb from approaching or communicating with the victim.

Community Reaction and Support

News of the incident has sparked outrage among Birkirkara residents. “We’re shocked that something like this could happen here,” said Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’ve always felt safe in our community, but this has shaken us all.”

The victim’s neighbours have rallied around her, offering support and comfort. A local community group has also set up a fundraiser to help with her immediate needs. “We want to ensure she knows she’s not alone,” said the group’s spokesperson.

Malta’s Minister for Social Accommodation and National Heritage, José Herrera, has condemned the alleged assault, stating, “Violence against women is never acceptable. We stand with the victim and will ensure she receives all the support she needs.”
