Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Sliema
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Sliema, a man found himself in handcuffs this week, accused of a heinous crime that has through the usually vibrant and safe community. The 35-year-old, a local resident, was remanded in custody on Monday, following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner.
Arrest and Remand
The man was arrested on Sunday evening by police officers from the Sliema district, following a complaint lodged by his former partner. The alleged incident occurred in the man’s apartment on Tower Road, a stone’s throw from the bustling Sliema seafront. The woman, also a Sliema resident, was reportedly taken to Mater Dei Hospital for medical treatment following the incident.
During the arraignment at the Magistrates’ Court in Valletta on Monday, the man was charged with rape and causing actual bodily harm. The court, presided over by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech, heard that the man had allegedly forced himself on his former partner, causing her injuries. The court also heard that the man had threatened the woman, telling her that if she reported the incident to the police, he would kill her.
The man, who was represented by lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran, was not required to enter a plea. The court remanded him in custody, deeming him a flight risk and a danger to the community. The case was adjourned to June, with the court ordering a legal aid lawyer to assist the man.
Community Reaction
The news of the alleged assault has sparked outrage and concern among Sliema residents. Many have taken to social media to express their shock and disgust at the alleged crime. “This is not the Sliema I know and love,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We pride ourselves on our community spirit and safety. This is a wake-up call for us all.”
Local councillor and community activist, Alexia Pace, echoed these sentiments. “I am appalled by these allegations. Sliema is a tight-knit community, and we will not stand for violence against women. We must support the victim and ensure that justice is served.”
