Floating Padel: Marsa Shipyard’s Unique Proposal
Barging In: A Padel Court on Water in Marsa?
Imagine this: a padel court floating on the Marsamxett Harbour, just off Marsa’s bustling docks. Not a mirage, but a proposal by local ship repair company, Grand Harbour Marina. They’ve applied to Malta’s Planning Authority to set up a temporary padel court on a barge, adding a unique twist to the island’s growing padel scene.
Padel by the Sea: A Novel Concept
Padel, a cross between squash and tennis, has taken Malta by storm. From Valletta’s city centre to the quieter corners of Gozo, courts are popping up everywhere. But a padel court on water? That’s a first. Grand Harbour Marina’s proposal, if approved, would see a 12×6 metre court installed on a barge, moored near the company’s shipyard.
“We wanted to offer something different, something unique to our employees and the community,” said Mario Xuereb, Grand Harbour Marina’s operations manager. “A padel court on water seemed like a fun, innovative idea.”
Floating Fun or Floating Concern?
While the idea has sparked curiosity, it’s also raised eyebrows. Environmentalists question the impact on the harbour’s ecosystem, while some residents wonder about noise and safety. “We’re addressing these concerns,” Xuereb assured. “The barge will be equipped with noise-reducing materials, and safety measures will be top-notch.”
the court is proposed to be temporary, lasting only a year. “It’s a pilot project,” Xuereb explained. “If it works well and doesn’t cause any issues, we might consider making it permanent.”
