Marsa’s Ducks Need New Home
Marsa’s Quacky Dilemma: Council Pleads for Ducks’ New Home
In the heart of Marsa, a town known for its industrial might and historic shipyards, lies a small pond. It’s not the kind of place you’d expect to find a thriving duck community. Yet, here they were, until recently. Now, the Marsa Local Council is appealing for help, as several ducks have died, and the remaining ones need a new home.
Ducks in Decline
The once bustling pond, tucked away behind the old grain silos on Triq il-Kbira, has seen its feathered residents dwindle. The council, aware of the situation, has been trying to care for the ducks, but the harsh winter and lack of proper facilities have taken a toll. “We’ve found several dead ducks this year,” says Councilor Joseph Xuereb, “and the ones left need a better environment.”
Searching for a New Home
The council is now appealing to the public, hoping to find a new home for the remaining ducks. They’re looking for a local pond or green area that’s well-maintained and can provide a safe and healthy environment for the birds. “We want to ensure these ducks have a chance at a happy, healthy life,” Xuereb adds.
This isn’t the first time Marsa has faced such a predicament. In 2015, a similar situation led to the ducks being rehomed at the Malta Falconry Centre in Siggiewi. However, this time, the council is hoping to find a closer, more permanent solution within Marsa itself.
Community Response
News of the ducks’ plight has sparked a wave of concern among Marsa residents. “I’ve seen these ducks since I was a kid,” says local resident Maria Azzopardi, “They’re part of Marsa’s charm. We need to help them.”
Social media has been abuzz with offers of help and suggestions for potential new homes. The Marsa Local Council has set up a hotline and an email address to coordinate these efforts. “We’re overwhelmed by the response,” says Xuereb, “It shows that Marsa cares about its feathered friends.”
