New Faces Aim to Shake Up District 1 Elections

Political Shake-up in District 1: New Faces Aim to Make Their Mark

It’s a crisp autumn morning in Birkirkara, Malta’s most populous locality. The bustling streets, lined with traditional balconied houses and modern shops, hum with the usual energy. Yet, there’s an undercurrent of anticipation, a sense that change is in the air. We’re in District 1, a bellwether district that has long been a political barometer for Malta, and this year’s local council elections promise to shake things up.

Meet the New Faces

In the heart of Birkirkara, at the bustling Triq San Gwann, we meet two of the new faces hoping to make a breakthrough. Matthew Xuereb, a 32-year-old marketing professional, and Maria Azzopardi, a 45-year-old social worker, are part of a new generation of candidates challenging the status quo.

Xuereb, a Birkirkara native, is running on a platform of youth engagement and innovation. “We need to tap into the energy and ideas of our young people,” he says, gesturing to the nearby Il-Birgu Square, where teens often gather. Azzopardi, meanwhile, is focusing on social issues and community support. “I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families face,” she says, “and I believe I can make a difference.”

Breaking the Mold

District 1 has long been a two-horse race between the Labour and Nationalist parties. This year, however, a record number of independent candidates and new parties are challenging the establishment. “People are hungry for change,” says Xuereb. “They want to see fresh faces and new ideas.”

Azzopardi nods in agreement. “We’ve seen the same faces for too long. It’s time for a change, time for people to have a real say in how their community is run.”

Issues at the Forefront

Traffic congestion, affordable housing, and community engagement top the list of concerns for District 1 residents. Xuereb and Azzopardi have been out in force, listening to voters and proposing solutions. Xuereb wants to explore smart city initiatives to ease traffic, while Azzopardi is pushing for more community centers and support services.

Both candidates also emphasize the need for more transparency and accountability in local governance. “We need to ensure that every decision is made with the community’s best interests at heart,” says Xuereb. Azzopardi agrees, “We need to build trust, and that starts with open communication and honest representation.”

The elections, set for June 4, promise to be a closely watched test of Malta’s political pulse. With a record number of candidates and a palpable hunger for change, District 1 could see a significant shift in its political scene.

As we wrap up our conversation, Xuereb and Azzopardi are clear about their vision. “We’re not just here to win votes,” says Xuereb. “We’re here to win hearts and minds, to show that politics can be about more than party lines and power plays. It’s about people, about community, about making a difference.”

And with that, they step back onto the bustling streets of Birkirkara, ready to continue their journey towards election day, and perhaps, towards a new era in Maltese politics.
