PN: Gov ‘Given Up’ on Fighting Crime

PN Slams Government’s Crime Fighting Efforts: ‘They’ve Thrown in the Towel’

As the sun set over the Grand Harbour last night, the usual hum of Valletta’s streets was replaced by an eerie silence. The absence of the city’s vibrant nightlife was not due to the pandemic, but a stark reminder of the escalating crime wave that has gripped Malta. The Nationalist Party (PN) has slammed the government’s handling of the situation, claiming that they have ‘given up’ on fighting crime.

Crime on the Rise: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Statistics from the Malta Police Force paint a grim picture. Robberies, burglaries, and even violent crimes have seen a significant increase in recent months. Take St. Julian’s, for instance. Once a bustling tourist hotspot, it’s now a shadow of its former self, with residents living in fear. The PN points to these figures as evidence of the government’s failure to protect Maltese citizens.

“We’re seeing a worrying trend,” said PN MP Jason Azzopardi. “Crime is on the rise, and the government seems content to sit back and do nothing. It’s as if they’ve thrown in the towel.”

Government’s Response: ‘We’re Doing Our Best’

The government, however, maintains that it is doing all it can to combat crime. Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, told Hot Malta, “We’re aware of the concerns of our citizens. We’re working tirelessly to strengthen our police force and improve security measures across the country.”

But the PN isn’t buying it. “Their words are cheap,” said Azzopardi. “Actions speak louder than words, and right now, their actions are saying that they’ve given up.”

What Next?

The PN is calling for a strong action plan to tackle crime, including increased police presence, stricter penalties for offenders, and better community engagement. But with a general election looming, it’s unclear whether the government will take heed.

“This isn’t about politics,” said Azzopardi. “It’s about keeping our communities safe. We need action, not empty promises.”
