Rabat’s Old Railway Station to Become Animal Rehoming Centre

Paws for Joy: Animal Haven Set for Rabat’s Old Railway Station

Picture this: a bustling Rabat street, the scent of fresh bread wafting from the nearby bakery, and the distant hum of cars on the main road. Now, imagine replacing that hum with the pitter-patter of little paws and the joyful barks of dogs eager to find their forever homes. This could soon be a reality as plans for an animal rehoming centre are announced for the old Rabat railway station.

From Rails to Rescues

The old Rabat railway station, a historic landmark that has stood vacant for years, is set for a heartwarming transformation. The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) has revealed plans to turn the disused building into a state-of-the-art animal rehoming centre. The project, named ‘Paws & Rails’, aims to provide a safe and comfortable space for rescued animals while they wait for their new families.

“We want to create a space where animals can be seen in a positive light,” says Dr. Maria Attard, Executive Director of MCVS. “The old railway station is the perfect location, with its central location and rich history. It’s a win-win situation – we get to give these animals a chance at a better life, and we also preserve a piece of Malta’s history.”

Community Support and Practicalities

The project has already gained significant support from the local community and various animal welfare organisations. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from the public,” says Dr. Attard. “People are excited about the prospect of having an animal rehoming centre in their community.”

But it’s not just about the warm fuzzies. The centre will also provide practical benefits. It will house a veterinary clinic, a grooming parlour, and even a small cafĂ© where visitors can enjoy a coffee while they meet the animals. The centre will also offer educational workshops on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

“We want this to be more than just a rehoming centre,” says Dr. Attard. “We want it to be a community hub where people can learn, engage, and connect over their shared love for animals.”

: Tracks to Trails

The project is still in its early stages, with construction expected to begin later this year. Once completed, the ‘Paws & Rails’ centre aims to rehome hundreds of animals each year, making a significant dent in Malta’s stray animal population.

As for the old railway station, it will finally see life again, not as a bustling transport hub, but as a beacon of hope and second chances for Malta’s forgotten pets.

“We’re not just building a rehoming centre,” says Dr. Attard. “We’re building a community, a family, and a future for these animals. And we can’t wait to see the first dog bounding down those old railway tracks, ready to start their new life.”
