Ħamrun, a bustling town just a stone’s throw from Malta’s capital, Valletta, is no stranger to political buzz. But lately, the hum has been louder, the anticipation thicker. The reason? District 2, the Labour stronghold led by none other than Prime Minister Robert Abela himself.

To understand District 2’s political clout, one must look its history. Ħamrun, with its strategic location and rich industrial past, has long been a Labour bastion. The party’s roots run deep here, with generations of Ħamrunin (residents) voting Labour. The district’s current MP, Robert Abela, is a testament to this legacy. Son of former Prime Minister Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, Abela has served Ħamrun since 2013, rising to become Malta’s leader in 2020.

Abela’s candidacy for the upcoming local council elections has sparked renewed interest in Ħamrun politics. For many Ħamrunin, it’s a matter of pride. “Having the Prime Minister as our MP shows how important Ħamrun is,” says Maria, a local shopkeeper. “We feel heard, seen.” Yet, not everyone is thrilled. Some Opposition supporters, like Joseph, a retired teacher, see Abela’s candidacy as a strategic move to shore up Labour votes. “It’s a smart political play,” he admits, “but it doesn’t change my vote.”

Regardless of political leanings, one thing is clear: District 2 is at the heart of Malta’s political conversation. As Ħamrunin head to the polls, all eyes will be on this Labour fortress, led by an Abela candidacy.
