Fire at St Julian’s Restaurant Causes Traffic Chaos
Flames and Fumes: St Julian’s Restaurant Blaze Snarls Traffic
As the morning sun began to peek over the Mediterranean, commuters in St Julian’s were greeted with an unexpected sight – a thick column of smoke billowing from a popular restaurant on the bustling Balluta Bay. The fire, which broke out around 7:30 AM, quickly engulfed the establishment, sending flames licking the walls and sending a plume of smoke visible from nearby Spinola Bay.
Chaos on the Roads
The blaze caused traffic chaos in the area, with police quickly cordoning off the street and rerouting traffic. Vehicles heading towards Paceville and Sliema found themselves diverted onto side streets, leading to congestion and delays. Residents and workers in the area were left to navigate the sudden changes, with some expressing frustration at the unexpected detours.
“I was running late for work as it is, and then I had to find an alternative route because of the road closures,” said Malta resident, Maria Grech, who lives in nearby St Andrew’s. “It’s not ideal, but safety comes first, of course.”
Firefighting Efforts and Aftermath
The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) swiftly responded to the incident, deploying several appliances to tackle the fire. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before finally bringing it under control. No injuries were reported, but the restaurant sustained significant damage, with its exterior charred and windows shattered.
Once the fire was extinguished, MFA personnel remained on the scene to monitor for any hotspots and ensure the safety of the area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
In the meantime, the restaurant’s owner, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed gratitude for the swift response of the emergency services. “It’s devastating to see my livelihood go up in smoke like this, but I’m just thankful no one was hurt,” they said.
As the day wore on, traffic in the area began to return to normal, with the road reopening to allow vehicles to pass. However, the smell of smoke lingered, serving as a reminder of the morning’s dramatic events.
In the coming days, the focus will shift to rebuilding and recovery. The restaurant’s owner plans to assess the damage and work towards reopening as soon as possible, with the support of the local community.
“We’ve weathered storms before, and we’ll weather this one too,” the owner said, determined. “St Julian’s is our home, and we’re not going anywhere.”
