Malta Connects to Abstract Art Pioneer at ARTE

Unveiling Malta’s Connection to Abstract Art: Hilma Af Klint at ARTE

Ever wondered what connects the bustling streets of Valletta to the pioneering spirit of early 20th-century abstract art? The answer might surprise you. Tucked away in the heart of our capital, ARTE, Malta’s leading contemporary art gallery, is currently hosting an exhibition that bridges this gap. ‘Hilma Af Klint: Pioneer of Abstract Art’ is not just an art show; it’s a journey into the mind of a visionary artist who, long before Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, was pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Who was Hilma Af Klint?

Hilma Af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist known for her bold, abstract paintings. Born into a family of artists and scientists, she was deeply influenced by both fields. Af Klint was a member of the spiritualist group ‘The Five’, who believed in communicating with the spirit world. Her art was heavily influenced by these spiritual experiences, as well as by scientific theories like electromagnetic waves and evolution.

What sets Af Klint apart is that she started creating abstract art as early as 1906, decades before it became widely accepted. Yet, she chose to keep her abstract works hidden from the public eye during her lifetime, fearing they wouldn’t be understood. It wasn’t until 1986, nearly four decades after her death, that her abstract paintings were first exhibited.

ARTE’s Hilma Af Klint Exhibition

ARTE’s exhibition, running until May 29, showcases a selection of Af Klint’s abstract works from her ‘Séance’ series. These paintings are a visual representation of the spiritualist séances Af Klint and her group held. The vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and dynamic compositions are a testament to Af Klint’s innovative approach to art.

What makes this exhibition particularly relevant to Malta is its timing. Coinciding with Valletta’s status as European Capital of Culture, it highlights the island’s commitment to promoting contemporary art and cultural exchange. The exhibition is also a reminder that art has the power to transcend borders and connect us to our shared human experience.

ARTE’s director, Marika Padovani, explains, “Hilma Af Klint’s work is a testament to the power of vision and courage. We’re thrilled to bring her groundbreaking art to Malta, encouraging our audience to question, explore, and appreciate the abstract.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned art enthusiast or a curious first-timer, ‘Hilma Af Klint: Pioneer of Abstract Art’ at ARTE is an exhibition not to be missed. It’s a rare opportunity to witness the birth of abstract art and to connect with a visionary artist who dared to see the world differently.

ARTE is located at 194, Republic Street, Valletta. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 – 18:00. Admission is free.
