Malta’s Own Mafia Story: A New ‘Godfather’ Novel from a Woman’s Perspective

Imagine this: a bustling street in Malta’s old town, Valletta. The sun is setting, casting long shadows over the cobblestones. A woman, dressed in black, steps out of a nondescript door, her eyes scanning the street. She’s not your typical Maltese grandmother. She’s the protagonist of a new ‘Godfather’-inspired novel, and she’s about to change the way we look at the mafia.

From Sicily to Malta: The New Godmother

The novel, titled “The Maltese Godmother,” is the brainchild of Malta-based author, Maria Azzopardi. Unlike the original ‘Godfather’ series, which focused on the Corleone family’s rise to power in New York, Azzopardi’s novel shifts the narrative to Malta and, more importantly, to the perspective of a woman.

“I wanted to explore what it would be like if a woman took the reins of a Maltese mafia family,” Azzopardi explains. “Malta has its own unique culture and history of organized crime, and I thought it was time we saw that reflected in literature.”

Breaking the Mafia’s Glass Ceiling

The novel follows Maria, a strong-willed woman who takes over her late father’s criminal empire. She navigates the treacherous waters of Malta’s underworld, facing challenges that range from rival families to internal power struggles. Azzopardi’s research took her deep into Malta’s criminal history, from the streets of Rabat to the halls of power in Castille Square.

“It was fascinating to uncover the real-life stories of women who’ve played significant roles in Malta’s criminal underworld,” Azzopardi says. “Their stories inspired Maria’s character and added a layer of authenticity to the novel.”

Malta’s Literary Scene: A New Wave of Crime Fiction

“The Maltese Godmother” is part of a growing trend of crime fiction set in Malta. Authors like Christopher Ellul and John Aquilina have paved the way, and Azzopardi’s novel promises to continue this trend.

Local bookstores like Gamruli in Valletta and Books & Co in Sliema are already stocking up on copies, anticipating high demand from Maltese readers eager for a fresh take on the mafia story.

the novel has caught the attention of international publishers, with talks of translations and global distribution underway. This could mark a significant step in putting Malta’s literary scene on the international crime fiction map.

As Azzopardi puts it, “Malta has a unique story to tell, and I’m excited to see more local authors stepping up to share our culture with the world.”

You can pre-order “The Maltese Godmother” now from local bookstores and online platforms. The official launch event will be held at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta on October 15th. Mark your calendars, and get ready to meet Malta’s new godmother.
